Dancing the fjord

Under the slogan "Open Port", the Stavanger region was European Capital of Culture in 2008, together with Liverpool. One of the projects was Fairy-tales in Landscape, an open-air theatre project staged at Lundsneset, near Lundsvågen small craft harbour and just south of the wide and open Åmøyfjorden. Nord-Hidle / Sjernarøyane

Natural harbour Map

59.13N 05.53E. Nord-Hidle is part of Sjernarøyane, an archipelago located one and a half nautical mile north of Finnøy. In addition to its intensely green landscape and long cultural history, Nord-Hidle offers a beautiful, narrow sound with good anchorage, although one must be aware of shallow waters. One can anchor also in the cove on the west side, if the weather is calm. Take note of a rock in the middle of the cove.

Nord-Hilde is cut out for hiking, and it is possible to order a guiding through the landscape and cultural history where erotic cults with phallus stones were central ingredients in the past. One of the farms, Norda-Hidle, offers B&B and/or a traditional local cuisine. Nord-Hidle is not far from the guest harbours at Helgøysund (Nord-Talje), Eiriksholmen (between Kyrkøy and Audbø), or Eidssund (Ombo), all with general store and bunkering. Se also the outport Rossmorkvågen, Nord-Talje.

This old pier, north-east at Hidleholmen, may be used.

Rossmarkvågen / Sjernarøyane

Natural harbour , Map

From Rossmakvågen.

59°13,45’N 05°48,05’E. Nord-Talje is part of the archipelago Sjernarøyane. The cove Rossmarkvågen, on the south-western part of the Island,  is often - by tourists - called "the blue lagoon". Here you are safe in all weather, but summers day the cove might become crowded. A Stavanger-sailor has made a sketch map of the bay. The area has a rich fauna and an interesting cultural history, including a marble quarry. There are fine moorings also among the islets near the cove, the same goes for the northern shores of Nord-Talje (Nota Homen has a pier). An interesting spot on the west side is Finnborg - a fortress-like mountain with å cove close by, used by the Vikings. Entrance is narrow and somewhat shallow. Try in fair weather. For Sjernarøyane, see also Nord-Hidle, further east. Be aware of a new bridge (max. 10 m.) between Nord-Hilde and the Island Tjul - to the north.

Lindøy, Hellesøy, Kalvøy

Pier / natural harbour Map

58°59,31’N 05°48,90’E. Lindøy is the gem among the many islands around Stavanger, and has an excellent guest pier although often crowded. If no berth is available, make fast to the rocks near by.  Note the wide shallow just south of the guest pier. Lindøy has nice walking paths through beautiful forest and agricultural land. A school building, formerly used for children with behaviour problems is situated on the island, but is no longer running. Every summer a music festival is held on the island. Hellesøy and Kalvøy lays south of Lindøy. Especially the strait between Hellesøy and Kalvøy is a great swimming and mooring spot in light winds (see below).

Rott and Tananger

Pier    Rott info.(No/Eng.)  Map

58°55,08’N 05°30,15’E. The island Rott is located off the coast, west of Tananger. A visit can be recommended either as a last stop before you set out to sea, or as a place to come to rest after coasting the outstretched and open Jæren. From Rott to Stavanger is still a few hours of sailing, so here you can seek shelter if the evening sets in. Rott has a small, public quay, but if you ask the locals there will always be a berth to find, even when the harbour is crowded. You may also swing at anchor in the bay. The waters around Rott are wild and beautiful, with scattered islets and reefs, so keep an eye on the chart. Tidal streams with rough sea may occur north along the coast towards Tungenes lighthouse. Entrance to Rott harbour is from the northwest. In the harbour you may chat with other boaters and cottagers, and wander around in the beautiful landscape. Tananger on the mainland, 3 nautical miles to the east, has a good guest harbour, (info in Eng.) and has most of what you may need in addition to good bus connections to Stavanger.

Tingholmen

Pier (disembarkation only) chart

58°58,08’N 05°52,82’E. Tingholmen is å popular recreation area, situated four nautical miles east of Stavanger. The island has nice grassy plains and small beaches, a toilet and a dumper. Tingholmen has mooring point on the rocks, but securing the anchor might be difficult due til rocky seabed and occasional waves from passing boats. The nice Litle Teistholmen is situated one nautical mile west of Tingholmen.

Treat the sheep with respect. They maintain the landscape.

Hattarvågen / Borgøya

Guest harbour / natural harbour chart

59°21,304'N 05°387,565'E. To get to Hattarvågen, you must head north in Hervikfjorden, pass Hervik (were you might bunker) and steer to port at impressive Borgøya. Hattarvågen (bay) on starboard side. At the head of the bay there is a tourist facility with a well equipped guest pontoons, accommodation and a restaurant serving you traditional food like salted meat and potato balls called "komla". You may anchor also east in the bay, near a nice tiny beach. On Borgøy you can walk on beautiful trails and experience the place where the Norwegian painter Lars Hertervik was born. South of Borgøy the fjord narrows, and is scattered by small islets. A perfect place for kayaking. Further north, there is another tourist center with guest harbour, Bekkjarvikjå, on port side. On starboard side you find Øynarvågen with a small pier. Four nautical miles further on, the beautiful fjord reaches Skjoldastraumen, known for its extremely strong tidal currents. Due to this, Norways only sea water lock is located here. It is operated for a reasonable price, from the petrol station close by. See Havneguiden regarding phone booking.

Buøysundet / Byre / Fisterøyane

Natural harbour Chart

59°09,216N 05°58,781'E. In the sound parting Byre from Buøy, you can lie both by the small islets in the west and alongside Buøy. Sailboats with moderate draft might pass through Byøysundet, by steering close to Buøy.

Nordre Eidsvåg / Fogn

Pier/ Natural harbour, Sea chart

N:59.07.71 E:05.54.25. In Nordre Eidsvåg you can moor at a public quay, but not permanently due to commercial use. There is a grocery shop further up the road. In the straits and bays just to the west, though, there are a lot of good anchorage in peaceful and picturesque surroundings. West of Fogn, in Nådesundet you will find god natural harbours, and private guest harbours at Reilstad and  Langøy.

Norwegian/Norsk:
Vær altså i nærheten i tilfelle noen trenger kaien i næringsøyemed.

Litle Teistholmen

Pier Map

Litle Teistholmen.

58.58,30'N 05.51,40'E. Litle Teistholmen is a small islet and recreation area, with a nice sheltered cove. Watch out for shallow water between Litle Teistholmen and Teistholmen to the north. The pier is exposed to northwestern winds. The popular Tingholmen is situated one nautical mile to the east.

Norwegian/Norsk:
Her er fint å bade.

Natural harbour Map

Situated in the midst of the so-called Fisterøyane, Sauøy is an islet with a beautiful sheltered cove. Position N: 59.10.20 E: 05.57.95. Entrance is from the south. You should steer to port, due to a rock. The cove has a small disembarkation pier (only for short-term mooring!) a toilet and a dumpster. You can anchor also on the northeaster shore, but here you will be more exposed to northerly winds. In the waters around Sauøy, are a series of bays, sounds and islets. To the north you see Halsnøy stretching into the air and further north, another archipelago and boating paradise; Sjernarøyane. Sauøy and the rest of Fisterøyane  are threatened by bridges, planed to cross directly over Sauøy.
